“The group sees South Asia, especially India and China, as markets with the most potential for the hospitality industry. The group has even relocated the headquarters of its Asia Pacific region from Sydney to Singapore to focus more on these markets,” said Vikram Cotah, vice-president of Radisson Hotel GRT. The group will open 25 Radisson hotels in India, adding a total of 3,877 rooms by the end of 2012. Currently there are 10 Radisson hotels in the country.

While some of the Radisson hotels are coming up in Chennai, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Guwahati, there are properties lined up in places like Haridwar, Manesar, Rudrapur and Agra. A total of 38 Radisson hotels are in the pipeline for South Asia, including five in China. Country Inn & Suites is Carlson’s mid-market brand that will add 16 properties in India by 2012. A total of 1,506 rooms will be added under this brand.

Among other Carlson brands, Park Plaza will have eight properties with a total of 632 rooms in India, two hotels under Park Inn and a 150-room Regent hotel in Gurgaon. Carlson will manage these properties under a revenue-sharing agreement with the developers.

According to Cotah, the hospitality industry has returned to its pre-recession times as occupancy levels have improved. While financial uncertainties still loom large over traditional markets like the US and Europe, travellers from countries like Russia and Spain have started contributing to the sector.
