Glossary of Architecture

An architect is a licensed professional who organizes space. Architects design house, office buildings, skyscrapers, landscapes, and even entire cities. Architects are trained in many areas, from historic preservation to structural engineering.
Building designer:- Professional building designers or house Designers, specialize in designing single family homes. In some cases, they may also design other light frame residential buildings, agricultural buildings, and decorative facades for larger buildings.
Board and batten:-
Board and batten describes a type of exterior siding or interior paneling that has alternating wide boards and narrow wooden strips, called battens. The boards are usually (but not always) one foot wide. The boards may be placed horizontally or vertically. The battens are usually (but not always) about 1/2 inch wide. These battens are placed over the seams between the boards.
Reverse board and batten has very narrow boards with wide battens installed over the seams. It’s also called as Board-and-batten siding is sometimes called barn-siding.
Building codes:- Federal, state and local regulations dictating the construction of a facility. Codes pertain to structure, building materials, accessibility to the handicapped, mechanical systems, electrical systems, glazing, foundations and numerous other items.
Building sections:- In the conceptual and schematic design stages, building sections show the stacking of various components and spaces by providing a visual slice of a portion of a building. In the design development and construction documents stages, building sections show construction details.
Built out:- Description of an area that has been developed with features such as infrastructure and buildings.Custom house builder:
A Custom house builder constructs a one-of-a-kind home that is designed for a specific client and for a particular location. The custom house builder may use plans created by an architect or by a professional house designer. Some custom house builders also offer professional design services. Because each house is unique, custom house builders generally construct only a few (less than twenty-five) homes a year. In most cases, custom house builders construct on land the house buyer already owns. However, some custom builders will provide the building lot.
High-performance Green Building Buildings that include design features that conserve water and energy; use space, materials, and resources efficiently; minimize construction waste; and create healthy indoor environments.
Schematic design Scaled floor plans, building sections, elevations and site plans. Schematic designs almost always include outline specifications indicating the types of engineering systems, glazing (glass) and doors and may include three-dimensional perspectives of the exterior as well as models of the entire building or portions of it.
We understand that quick access to valuable resources is essential today. This glossary of technical terms commonly used in the architecture and engineering industry was compiled with that in mind.
